Had a Bad Experience Before?

If you’ve had a bad experience with counselling before, you’re not alone. Connection between client and counsellor is hands down the most important indicator for effective therapy. If the way I work doesn’t land with you, there are so many great counsellors out there, please ask for referrals or continue to search until you find someone who speaks to you. This work is SO important and it requires to right connection to navigate the process safely and effectively. I promise you If it ISN’T me, it IS someone. Don’t give up!

Typical Session

I operate from a person centred approach which means our time together is it is all about you. This is your time and your space to reflect and process. My job to create safety and help keep us on track toward the change we are striving for. Depending on where you are at in your journey, we will often begin with incorporating elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to create some common language between us before moving into experiential work, should we choose to go that route. In a typical 60 minute experiential session, 30-40 min will still be used as standard talk therapy with the last 20-30 minutes being reserved for the the experiential work, however this ratio is flexible. To clarify, engaging in this type of experiential work is not a pre requisite to working together. There is tons of growth to be had in standard talk therapy format which I am more than happy to provide if that feels more aligned with your needs!

Experiential Work

Experiential work is when we use our time in session to dive deeper into the systemic causes of your presenting issue. My favourite method of doing this is through Internal Family Systems Therapy often referred to as IFS. In IFS we use mindfulness and guided meditation to discover and build relationships with all the different parts of yourself. We identify the fears, needs and wants of those parts and endeavour to create healthier, more effective roles for them within your system. It can sound a bit wild I know, but this way of perceiving and managing your inner world can be extremely effective in treating many kinds of common mental health issues. If you have tried talk therapy before and found it just didn’t stick, definitely consider trying a form of experiential work to help create meaningful and lasting change!
